Tammy is a recreational runner who lives in suburban Australia. Several years ago, she ran three marathons in one year and ran a personal best in one of her runs. Her body was feeling surprisingly good at the end of it all. She planned on running marathons again this year and even wanted to run at an event overseas.
Training began in January of this year. Interestingly, she noticed over time that her body was feeling quite worn out and constantly aching. During the difficult moments of training, it was obvious that her body was not performing at the level it used to. Disappointed in the way her body was recovering, she withdrew from marathon training.
Not long after withdrawing, Tammy discovered the infrared sauna. She heard about it from a friend and thought it would be worth a try. Over time, regular use has helped her to better manage her body. Consequently, she has decided to run one marathon this year.
How often is your body keeping you from doing what you love? How often do you struggle to recover post-exercise?
Living an active lifestyle is imperative for many people. A longing for positivity, boundless energy and good health, but too often our body can’t keep up. Even with the resources we have, we are yet to find our vitality.
As John F. Kennedy once said “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity”.
Through scientific research, infrared saunas have been shown to assist with flexibility, joint health and improved circulation – all helpful for recovery.
Below, we have outlined research that has been conducted.
Once you get your body back to an optimal state of wellbeing, you’ll find yourself living the active lifestyle you love again.
2 Research Studies showing that Infrared Saunas may assist with Muscle Recovery
1) Flexibility and Joint Health
If you’re an exercise enthusiast, you’ll know that flexibility and joint health are important to your performance and longevity. If your body is stiff and rigid, it may lead to a number of issues down the track.
In a 2013 study completed by the Auburn University at Montgomery, a study compared stretching in a Sunlighten mPulse 3-in-1™ sauna to a typical training room environment. Participants completed a series of hamstring stretches in random order with 48 hours separating the sessions. Results showed that acute flexibility increased up to 3 x in the mPulse sauna than without. Benefits to the increased range of motion include joint mobility, less friction in the joints, enabling of joint function to diminish stiffness and joint relaxation. View study.
2) Boost your circulation to help with aches and pains
Circulation has been shown to have a positive effect on relieving aches and pains. Most of us don’t have a masseuse available at our beck and call. Instead, we often rely on our bodies to hold up on their own.
Not anymore. Infrared heat therapy assists with optimising blood flow to the heart, skeletal muscles, skin and other issues.
According to a study the Journal of American Cardiology, blood flow during infrared sauna use has been reported to rise from a normal rate of 5-7 quarts per minute to as much as 13 quarts per minute. 2
Bonus Study: According to a 2008 Japanese study published in the journal, Internal Medicine, chronic pain patients experienced a significant reduction in pain levels (nearly 70%) after the first session of infrared sauna therapy. Pain scores also decreased significantly and remained low throughout the observation period. Researchers concluded that infrared heat therapy is effective for chronic pain treatment.3
The bottom line: If you want to get the most of your life with the energy to do what you love, don’t let your body slow you down.
Being physically active enhances your overall health and wellbeing. Entering an event like a marathon, triathlon or even completing a multiday hike takes a lot of commitment and dedication. To recover the body and mind and stay off the side lines, commit to some time out in the sauna.
You deserve it and your body will thank you for it.
